Touchline Dad

Touchline Dad

TOUCHLINE Dad is written by Peter Harvey, a newspaper editor with Trinity Mirror Merseyside. Father-of-three Peter, 40, was a writer for the Liverpool Echo during the 1990s and has been editor of Trinity Mirror titles the Crosby Herald, Bootle Times and the Advertiser Series, West Lancashire. Touchline Dad is a lifelong Liverpool fan.

Our Jack...

Jack with his first Man of the Match award

JACK Harvey is seven, going on seventy-seven. He's a dependable, no-nonsense defender for Marine FC's U7s. He's played in the Bootle and Netherton league and Hightown league in north Merseyside. Jack has also played for Crosby Stuart. He is being encouraged to appreciate both Liverpool AND Everton...for now at least.

The Gaffer

The Gaffer

THE Gaffer is a true Blue. She's now swapped her Gwladys Street season ticket for one at the new Liverpool One shopping complex. She still gets steamed up thinking about Graeme Sharp in his skimpy shorts.

Not forgeting...

Emily

EMILY is five and has no interest in football. Her kicks come from dressing up, make-up, bangles and beads. Oh, and shoes. She changes them at least five times a day. Likes ballet, swimming and shopping. Cross her at your peril.

And finally...

Paddy

PADDY inherited a mini Everton kit from Sam down the road. No doubt 'Pads' will also get Jack's pass-me-downs, so that will narrow his allegiance to Real Madrid, Juventus, Republic of Ireland, England, Everton and Liverpool. Loves pirates, Shrek and Wall-e. He's got the second worst temper I know...

Marine AFC

FORMED in 1894 and based in Crosby, north Mersyside. The first team plays in the Northern Premier League and were champions in 1994 and 1995. 220.jpgThey had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Crosby Stuart

THIS was Jack's first club. It was formed in the early 1970s in north Liverpool and is now one of the biggest and most successful junior football clubs in the North West. Crosby StuartFormer players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'

Football Crazy

"JACK stood before me in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas, hands on hips. I kicked him hard in the shins. Instead of falling to the carpet and rolling in agony, he laughed. 'Do it again, Dad. Do it again. We’ll trick Mum.' I didn’t fancy chancing our comedy double act with The Gaffer, so instead Jack clambered into bed still wearing his new 'shinnies.' 'Maybe tomorrow, eh dad?' he asked as he closed his eyes to see his Premier League heroes greet him."

Classic Kits Make Top 50

EVERTON and Liverpool's classic round-necked kits from the 1960s and 1970s both make it into The Times Top 50 kits. It's not a scientific survey. Far from it. But few would disagree that they deserve their place. Just thinking...

100 Famous Football Jacks

UPDATE: 'We've done it!!' TO mark the 100th post on Touchline Dad, here's a challenge to readers. A few weeks ago Jack was feeling a bit sorry for himself as we drove home following a rare defeat for his...

Everton: 1966 FA Cup Final

EVERTON'S never-say-die team spirit (Chelsea got a dose of their own medicine on Sunday courtesy of Tim Cahill's last-gasp scissors kick) will have some Blues dreaming of a cup run. Forty years ago, Everton were the original comeback kings...

Dad!! You're So Embarrassing!!

KIDS change from cherubs into surly brats quicker than a light bulb blowing, said Radio Merseyside's resident dad Tony Snell the other morning. "You cynical sod, Snelly," I muttered as I drove to work, thinking of my three lovely...

Liverpool 7, Spurs 0

IT was one of the greatest 'team' goals ever - Dalglish to Johnson, Heighway cross, McDermott far post, GOAL! Liverpool only drew 2-2 against Tottenham at the weekend, but here's a chance for Reds to relive one of Anfield's...

Cetius, Altius, Fortius...Save Us!

AS a kid I loved the Olympics Games - even though it brought a realisation that Great Britain did not rule the world. Suddenly, people from unheard of countries like America were 'faster, higher and stronger' than our chaps, even...

Tapas and Torres

THE first big transfer of my childhood was Kevin Keegan to Hamburg SV in 1977 - just weeks after helping the Reds win the European Cup in Rome. I couldn't understand what was going on. Why would anyone want to...

Billy The Whizzkid

THE mugshot of Jack in the Touchline Dad heading reminds me of Billy's Boots or Roy of the Rovers. Not that Jack's got a blonde mullet and the cheesiest grin in Melchester. Every Friday during my final year at primary...

Kopites are 'Gay'

IT takes a brave man to stand in front of the Kop and call the crowd gay. In the early 1960s that's just what BBC news reporter Mr Cholmondley-Warner did when despatched to Anfield (isn't that up North?) to do...

Welcome to Dixieland

YOUTube is fast becoming a compelling TV archive spanning many generations. It's one of the most watched things in our house - whether it's Emily absorbed by Aqua's 'Barbie Girl' or Paddy throwing his curls around to Wayne's World take...

World Cup 1974

I WAS trying to work out how interested in football I was at Jack’s age. He's certainly more 'into' the sport than I was at six. Perhaps it's a reflection of the dawn till dusk TV coverage and its all-round...

Who Ate All The Pies?

GOALKEEPER William Foulkes would be the first name on the team sheet for an All-Time Fatties XI. He was nicknamed 'Fatty' with good reason. If we can believe what's written about him, he weighed in at 24 stone towards the...

From The Mouths of Babes

PLAYERS from Everton's glory days of the mid-1980s teamed up for a night to remember at Goodison Park. It meant a late night for Jack, but he really enjoyed himself. Eight goals were rattled in with a Barcelona veterans' team...

Jumpers For Goal Posts

THE season is getting off to a sluggish, frustrating start for the lads (Crosby Stuart under-6s) due to the bad weather. Two out of three matches have been cancelled but the kids' enthusiasm is still sky high and the postponements...

Roll over Stan, Here’s Sarah

JUST as I thought. The Gaffer nodded off while watching Poirot. Well, if she must stay up gossiping with the girls until 3am leaving me to do the morning milk run with baby Paddy... Clambered up to the loft in...

Dreaming about Stan Bowles

SHARING Jack’s joy at completing his Shootout Premier League cards collection got me reminiscing about my own childhood. Scurrying up to Norman Hood’s newsagents on the top road on a Sunday afternoon with my pocket money clenched in my right...
