Touchline Dad

Touchline Dad

TOUCHLINE Dad is written by Peter Harvey, a newspaper editor with Trinity Mirror Merseyside. Father-of-three Peter, 39, worked as a writer for the Liverpool Echo during the 1990s and is the former editor of the Crosby Herald and Bootle Times newspapers (2001-2006). He is currently editor of the Advertiser Series in West Lancashire. Touchline Dad is a lifelong Liverpool fan.

Our Jack...

Jack with his first Man of the Match award

JACK Harvey is seven, going on seventy-seven. He's a dependable, no-nonsense defender for Marine FC's U7s playing in the Bootle and Netherton Junior Football League in north Liverpool. Jack played for Crosby Stuart U7s in 2006/7, helping them win every league game. He is being encouraged to appreciate both Liverpool AND Everton...for now at least.

The Gaffer

The Gaffer

THE Gaffer is a true Blue. Although she's now swapped her Gwladys Street season ticket for looking after three children on a Saturday afternoon, she still gets steamed up thinking about Graeme Sharp in his skimpy shorts.

Not forgeting...

Emily

EMILY is five and has no interest in football. Her kicks come from Barbie girls and make-up, bangles and beads. Oh, and shoes. She changes them at least five times a day. Dabbles with ballet and swimming. Cross her at your peril.

And finally...

Paddy

PADDY inherited a mini Everton kit from Sam down the road. No doubt 'Pads' will also get Jack's pass-me-downs, so that will narrow his allegiance to Real Madrid, Juventus, Republic of Ireland, England, Everton and Liverpool. Loves pirates, yoghurts and Josie Jump. He's got the second worst temper in the North West...

Marine AFC

FORMED in 1894 and based in Crosby, north Mersyside. The first team plays in the Northern Premier League and were champions in 1994 and 1995. 220.jpgThey had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Crosby Stuart

THIS was Jack's first club. It was formed in the early 1970s in north Liverpool and is now one of the biggest and most successful junior football clubs in the North West. Crosby StuartFormer players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'

Football Crazy

"JACK stood before me in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas, hands on hips. I kicked him hard in the shins. Instead of falling to the carpet and rolling in agony, he laughed. 'Do it again, Dad. Do it again. We’ll trick Mum.' I didn’t fancy chancing our comedy double act with The Gaffer, so instead Jack clambered into bed still wearing his new 'shinnies.' 'Maybe tomorrow, eh dad?' he asked as he closed his eyes to see his Premier League heroes greet him."

Marine U7s 2, Fleetwood Juniors U7s 1

Posted by Peter Harvey on March 31, 2008 10:52 AM |

Marine FCTHE Gaffer put the jinx on our Jack. Moments after she made her 2008 debut on the touchline (together with her fairweather friends Emily and Paddy), Jack was substituted.

Thankfully, he came back on a few minutes later to bolster the defence as the mini Mariners won in the spring sunshine.

Jack enjoyed the victory over Fleetwood who had deservedly dumped Marine out of the cup seven days earlier.

However, a bit of cockiness crept in culminating in some of the Fleetwood players chanting 'You're crap!' before the kick-off.

Just the incentive our lads needed. Nice one. Thanks.

Marine U7s 2, Fleetwood Juniors 1

MARINE finished their campaign in fine style to gain revenge over their cup conquerors from last week, Fleetwood Juniors, with a performance that was a week too late.

A more determined Marine started the game well and worked hard to close down Fleetwood quickly. To Fleetwood’s credit they didn’t allow Marine much time either which meant there wasn’t going to be many chances in the early part of the game.

Marine began to dominate possession and tried to use their wide players as much as possible on a tight pitch.

Kieron Thornton did well down the left to get his crosses in and, despite creating a few chances, the Marine frontline lacked the clinical finishing they have shown throughout the season to get their just rewards.

The half finished goalless with Marine still in the ascendancy but with no goals to show for it there was an air of déjà vu from last week's encounter.

The second half began as the first had finished, with Marine pressing forward in search of the vital first goal.

It wasn’t too long before the mini Mariners were celebrating with a rather scrappy goal with Tom Flannery showing the killer touch lacking in the first half and with great determination he slammed the ball in from close range despite being surrounded by the Fleetwood defence.

The relief was evident from the players and sadly, they took their foot of the pedal for a period and allowed Fleetwood chances to break forward.

The sense of déjà vu returned when Fleetwood managed to get back into the game with a goal that was strikingly similar to last week’s goal.

After a couple of well taken corners the Marine defence lost its composure and with another corner put right on the spot a cruel deflection saw the ball cross the line in what looked like slow motion as the defence looked on.

Credit to Marine, they raised their game again in search of the winner and with just over 5 minutes remaining, MOM, Kieron Thornton capped a great game with a strike to give Marine the winning lead.

Fleetwood tried to get back on terms again but a very solid Andrew Begbie and Jack Harvey in defence made sure the Marine goal was never troubled and Marine saw out the game to gain small consolation after last weeks result.

Marine thoroughly deserved the win and the final scoreline was not a true reflection of the game with it slightly flattering Fleetwood’s performance.

There were some great performances all over the pitch for Marine with all of the boys showing more determination and willingness to work, which was their downfall last week.

Kieron Thornton made some great runs down the left, but the more pleasing aspect of his game was his effort in getting the ball back and hustling the Fleetwood defence into making mistakes. Well done to all the squad. Colin Begbie

I thought the goading of our players was a great incentive for the boys and probably helped us if anything. Glad to see their coach did reprimand them and I'm sure he was cringing inside.
I think the 18 point gap in the final league table between the two teams speaks volumes as to who was the better team.
Well done to Indanet for securing the league title after a play-off victory against Croxteth Park Whites on Saturday. The table finished with just 3 points between the first 3 so finishing third in a very competative and high quality league is a great effort from all of our boys. They deserve great credit.

Someone told me that the manager of Croxterh Park Whites said at the start of the season, that they would finish first but Marine would finish second (we were that good). Neither prediction was right, but to finish just three points behind the team that finished top of the league, and one point behind the league winners (How does that work?!)is a fantastic achievement for the boys. What a great group of lads, what a great group of parents, what a great future we have in front of us...
