Touchline Dad

Touchline Dad

TOUCHLINE Dad is written by Peter Harvey, a newspaper editor with Trinity Mirror Merseyside. Father-of-three Peter, 39, worked as a writer for the Liverpool Echo during the 1990s and is the former editor of the Crosby Herald and Bootle Times newspapers (2001-2006). He is currently editor of the Advertiser Series in West Lancashire. Touchline Dad is a lifelong Liverpool fan.

Our Jack...

Jack with his first Man of the Match award

JACK Harvey is seven, going on seventy-seven. He's a dependable, no-nonsense defender for Marine FC's U7s playing in the Bootle and Netherton Junior Football League in north Liverpool. Jack played for Crosby Stuart U7s in 2006/7, helping them win every league game. He is being encouraged to appreciate both Liverpool AND Everton...for now at least.

The Gaffer

The Gaffer

THE Gaffer is a true Blue. Although she's now swapped her Gwladys Street season ticket for looking after three children on a Saturday afternoon, she still gets steamed up thinking about Graeme Sharp in his skimpy shorts.

Not forgeting...

Emily

EMILY is five and has no interest in football. Her kicks come from Barbie girls and make-up, bangles and beads. Oh, and shoes. She changes them at least five times a day. Dabbles with ballet and swimming. Cross her at your peril.

And finally...

Paddy

PADDY inherited a mini Everton kit from Sam down the road. No doubt 'Pads' will also get Jack's pass-me-downs, so that will narrow his allegiance to Real Madrid, Juventus, Republic of Ireland, England, Everton and Liverpool. Loves pirates, yoghurts and Josie Jump. He's got the second worst temper in the North West...

Marine AFC

FORMED in 1894 and based in Crosby, north Mersyside. The first team plays in the Northern Premier League and were champions in 1994 and 1995. 220.jpgThey had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Crosby Stuart

THIS was Jack's first club. It was formed in the early 1970s in north Liverpool and is now one of the biggest and most successful junior football clubs in the North West. Crosby StuartFormer players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'

Football Crazy

"JACK stood before me in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas, hands on hips. I kicked him hard in the shins. Instead of falling to the carpet and rolling in agony, he laughed. 'Do it again, Dad. Do it again. We’ll trick Mum.' I didn’t fancy chancing our comedy double act with The Gaffer, so instead Jack clambered into bed still wearing his new 'shinnies.' 'Maybe tomorrow, eh dad?' he asked as he closed his eyes to see his Premier League heroes greet him."

Liverpool FC: Excuses Wearing Thin

Posted by Peter Harvey on January 22, 2008 8:02 AM |

Ryan Babel had an instant impact against Aston Villa when Rafa finally decided to cart off Kewell

LFCRAFA feels he's a victim of unfriendly fire from the Yanks. The Yanks clearly don't rate Rafa. Not surprising, the way he's behaved. Now, the players are blaming off-the-pitch distractions for poor performances and poor results.

Of course, there's elements of truth concealed within all this insecurity. But, they all need to get on with the job and stop blaming each other. Fans are getting fed up with it.

The 2-2 result against Aston Villa was disappointing, but what can you expect when the manager picks Harry Kewell ahead of Ryan Babel again!!! Is he taking the XXXX??

Yet again Babel made more impact on the game within two minutes of coming on, than the Aussie winger had done for the preceding hour.

Perhaps soon we'll start hearing fans saying: "Hey, Rafa was right wasn't he? Sticking with Kewell and not playing Babel. Genius." Perhaps Maggie Thatcher will be photographed sunbathing topless on Crosby beach alongside Arthur Scargill.

Rafa also persists with his other two favourites Aurelio and Kuyt who are likeable and hard-working but simply not up to the job. Kuyt, in particular, has badly disappointed as a goal scorer.

It's almost as if Benitez has got a deathwish. If Hicks and Gillett sacked him today, few could honestly blame them. He's had the money, he's had the time and now he's seemingly taking the team backwards when all around can see that some of his decisions are as absurd as they are stubborn.

The main reason Liverpool have thrown so many points away in games they should have won so far this season is Rafa Benitez. Next, the players shoulder responsibility for under-performing.

Finally, fans can point the finger at The Muppets, who do not deserve Liverpool FC but who can hardly be blamed for poor team selection, negative tactics, surrendering possesion and squandering goal chances.

The good news is, at least the players will be fresh for the Premier League run-in. Remind me, how do you get 30 points from five games, Rafa?

I must say that I am a bit disappointed that Gerrard has stated that off the field shenanigans are affecting the players performance. Totally ridiculous thing to say as a professional player. They are all very highly paid individuals who should be able to focus on a game of football without thinking about who is going to own the club next week!
Perhaps the fans didn't help last night by chanting derogatory songs most of the match instead of actually supporting the team.
Bottom line is, we have players who are just not good enough and others who are under performing. Kewell, Aurelio and Kuyt should never be in the team. Rafa seems to be losing the plot (never been the same since Paco left!).
I am no great fan of our American owners at the moment but to all those fans who chose not to support the team last night, do you really think the team will play better just because we are owned by the Arabs instead? Rafa and the players have got to shoulder the responsibility of what is looking like another poor league campaign

This schadenfreude is really getting me down and it even seems to be affecting the boys in Valencia, except Manny who has returned to the fold.

It's about time Liverpool fans started to grow up a little bit, fair enough they've won the Champions League under Rafa but at the expense of a good league run and finished fifth that season, AC Milan managed that last time out.
They complain about Chelsea having all the cash - just like every British fan around nowadays - then sulk at the fact they get money and do beggar all with it.
They just can't be pleased and to me they're one step away from Newcastle's support and no-one wants to be likened to that lot.
