Marine U7s 0, Croxteth Park Whites U7s 1
THE young Mariners lost nothing in defeat with a battling performance in this top of the table clash with Croxteth Park Whites.
The first half was a superb advert for junior football; it was played at 100mph with both teams playing with a lot passion and commitment. There was a lot of hard, but fair, tackling with neither of the teams giving an inch.
Chances were few and far between, thanks in no small part to typically gutsy performances from Bradley Roberts, Max Smith and Andrew Begbie and it was no surprise that the first half remained goalless.
Both teams continued to play in the same vein in the second half. The high tempo of the game continued and it was only a matter of time before something had to give.
Unfortunately for Marine it was Croxteth who eventually broke the deadlock as both teams began to tire. With about 5 minutes remaining a speculative Croxteth shot found its way through a crowded goalmouth. Keeper Paul Williams saw the shot late and was unable to reach it despite a valiant effort.
It was a cruel and unfortunate way to lose the game but all of the boys can be proud of their efforts especially, MOM Andrew Begbie who protected his defence so well in the heart of midfield.
The match was a wonderful and exciting game with credit to both teams for playing their part with the correct spirit and it was unfortunate that one team had to lose out in such a closely fought game.
Although Croxteth Park took all of the points, football was the real winner on the day. Well done to all of the boys on such a wonderful effort. Ron Silcock
