Touchline Dad

Touchline Dad

TOUCHLINE Dad is written by Peter Harvey, a newspaper editor with Trinity Mirror Merseyside. Father-of-three Peter, 39, worked as a writer for the Liverpool Echo during the 1990s and is the former editor of the Crosby Herald and Bootle Times newspapers (2001-2006). He is currently editor of the Advertiser Series in West Lancashire. Touchline Dad is a lifelong Liverpool fan.

Our Jack...

Jack with his first Man of the Match award

JACK Harvey is seven, going on seventy-seven. He's a dependable, no-nonsense defender for Marine FC's U7s playing in the Bootle and Netherton Junior Football League in north Liverpool. Jack played for Crosby Stuart U7s in 2006/7, helping them win every league game. He is being encouraged to appreciate both Liverpool AND Everton...for now at least.

The Gaffer

The Gaffer

THE Gaffer is a true Blue. Although she's now swapped her Gwladys Street season ticket for looking after three children on a Saturday afternoon, she still gets steamed up thinking about Graeme Sharp in his skimpy shorts.

Not forgeting...

Emily

EMILY is five and has no interest in football. Her kicks come from Barbie girls and make-up, bangles and beads. Oh, and shoes. She changes them at least five times a day. Dabbles with ballet and swimming. Cross her at your peril.

And finally...

Paddy

PADDY inherited a mini Everton kit from Sam down the road. No doubt 'Pads' will also get Jack's pass-me-downs, so that will narrow his allegiance to Real Madrid, Juventus, Republic of Ireland, England, Everton and Liverpool. Loves pirates, yoghurts and Josie Jump. He's got the second worst temper in the North West...

Marine AFC

FORMED in 1894 and based in Crosby, north Mersyside. The first team plays in the Northern Premier League and were champions in 1994 and 1995. 220.jpgThey had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Crosby Stuart

THIS was Jack's first club. It was formed in the early 1970s in north Liverpool and is now one of the biggest and most successful junior football clubs in the North West. Crosby StuartFormer players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'

Football Crazy

"JACK stood before me in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas, hands on hips. I kicked him hard in the shins. Instead of falling to the carpet and rolling in agony, he laughed. 'Do it again, Dad. Do it again. We’ll trick Mum.' I didn’t fancy chancing our comedy double act with The Gaffer, so instead Jack clambered into bed still wearing his new 'shinnies.' 'Maybe tomorrow, eh dad?' he asked as he closed his eyes to see his Premier League heroes greet him."

Big Bad Dad...Again!!!

Posted by Peter Harvey on October 8, 2007 2:01 PM |

220.jpgYOU may remember I badly let down Jack on that not-so-glorious night in May when he was keen to watch the Champions League final with me. A dad and lad night.

His horrible dad was keen to get boozed up with his pals and cheer the mighty Reds to victory over AC Milan in the pub...again.

God made Liverpool lose that night as a punishment. Well, it's happened again.

This time my excuse is a better one. I was travelling down to Brighton to collect Auntie Pat and cousin Catherine and consequently I couldn't see Jack in action on Saturday morning.

It was the first match I had missed during his fledgling career. Boy, did Jack punish me.

He rang me afterwards to tell me they had won 2-0 and that he was man of the match. I was hurtling along the M25 at 90mph, weaving in and out of traffic, but I took the call on my mobile phone.

To compound my guilt, I had to tell him I couldn't speak for long because PC Plod would send me to jail. I said 'Well done, mate. I'm really proud of you' but I could detect his disappointment.

He was thinking: "You can't be bothered watching me and now you can't be bothered talking to me. The Gaffer's right, mate. You are a crap dad."

What will be my punishment from God this time?

Here's the official match report....

Marine U7s 2, Fleetwood Juniors U7s 0

MARINE got their league campaign off to a winning start with a far from convincing victory over a battling Fleetwood team in a close and tense encounter.

The first half was very even with both defences coming out on top with few chances for either team. Fleetwood seemed to be the hungrier team in midfield but thanks to some great work in defence by Jack Harvey, Liam Bromilow and keeper Paul Williams the score remained goalless in the first half.

The half-time team talk and a couple of substitutions seemed to make the difference as Marine came out a different team in the second half. With a little bit more urgency in their play Marine began to find space on down both flanks and create more chances.

Half time substitute and debut boy, Bradley Roberts, eventually broke the deadlock with a fine individual effort.

Fleetwood came back at Marine but were unable to get past a solid defence. With Fleetwood committing more players up front Marine created more chances and Bradley Roberts was unlucky not to make it two when a great long-range effort hit the bar.

His second, however, did come shortly afterwards when he got on the end of a goalmouth scramble to force the ball over. Despite having a couple more chances the scoreline finished 2-0 to Marine.

The Marine victory owed much to a great second half performance especially by debutant, Bradley Roberts, but MOM went to Jack Harvey for a faultless display in defence.

The second half performance was encouraging but the boys will need to up their game in the next few weeks and come out of the blocks a little quicker than they have been if they want to compete with the top teams.

Hopefully, this victory will give them the confidence they seem to be lacking at the moment and we can build on this over the next few weeks. A good result boys. Colin Begbie

I went over to Jack after the match to congratulate him on his performance and him being awarded MOM. He looked up at me with tears in his eyes and a phone in his hand, (Was it you he'd just called Touchline dad?) and whispered to me, almost choking, 'I wish YOU were my dad...'It was like an epsiode of Little House on the Prairie. I said 'Have a word with your mother Jack, I'm sure we can come to some arrangement!' Anything to help

By the way, seriously Peter, Jack really did have a good game. You should have seen it. Oops, sorry.

You also missed Emily in her Irish Dancing competition on Saturday. She was wonderful by the way, and thoroughly deserved her trophy. She was so proud of herself but wanted to know where her Daddy was.

There seems to be a consensus of opinion. Mr Waring has put it most succinctly so far.

We all know you are only a part-time Dad. I have stood on the line every week watching my poor son's team get battered every week. Believe me that is painful. Support your children or I will adopt them!
