Touchline Dad

Touchline Dad

TOUCHLINE Dad is written by Peter Harvey, a newspaper editor with Trinity Mirror Merseyside. Father-of-three Peter, 39, worked as a writer for the Liverpool Echo during the 1990s and is the former editor of the Crosby Herald and Bootle Times newspapers (2001-2006). He is currently editor of the Advertiser Series in West Lancashire. Touchline Dad is a lifelong Liverpool fan.

Our Jack...

Jack with his first Man of the Match award

JACK Harvey is seven, going on seventy-seven. He's a dependable, no-nonsense defender for Marine FC's U7s playing in the Bootle and Netherton Junior Football League in north Liverpool. Jack played for Crosby Stuart U7s in 2006/7, helping them win every league game. He is being encouraged to appreciate both Liverpool AND Everton...for now at least.

The Gaffer

The Gaffer

THE Gaffer is a true Blue. Although she's now swapped her Gwladys Street season ticket for looking after three children on a Saturday afternoon, she still gets steamed up thinking about Graeme Sharp in his skimpy shorts.

Not forgeting...

Emily

EMILY is five and has no interest in football. Her kicks come from Barbie girls and make-up, bangles and beads. Oh, and shoes. She changes them at least five times a day. Dabbles with ballet and swimming. Cross her at your peril.

And finally...

Paddy

PADDY inherited a mini Everton kit from Sam down the road. No doubt 'Pads' will also get Jack's pass-me-downs, so that will narrow his allegiance to Real Madrid, Juventus, Republic of Ireland, England, Everton and Liverpool. Loves pirates, yoghurts and Josie Jump. He's got the second worst temper in the North West...

Marine AFC

FORMED in 1894 and based in Crosby, north Mersyside. The first team plays in the Northern Premier League and were champions in 1994 and 1995. 220.jpgThey had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Crosby Stuart

THIS was Jack's first club. It was formed in the early 1970s in north Liverpool and is now one of the biggest and most successful junior football clubs in the North West. Crosby StuartFormer players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'

Football Crazy

"JACK stood before me in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas, hands on hips. I kicked him hard in the shins. Instead of falling to the carpet and rolling in agony, he laughed. 'Do it again, Dad. Do it again. We’ll trick Mum.' I didn’t fancy chancing our comedy double act with The Gaffer, so instead Jack clambered into bed still wearing his new 'shinnies.' 'Maybe tomorrow, eh dad?' he asked as he closed his eyes to see his Premier League heroes greet him."

Chelsea Boss: January 1, 2008?

Posted by Peter Harvey on September 27, 2007 11:01 PM |

ONE of the biggest surprises of the season will be if Crazy Frog lookalike Avram Grant is still in charge at Stamford Bridge in the New Year.

As appointments go, this one's got caretaker written all over it. Three 'big' names are being linked with succeeding the Premier League's newest manager - Lippi, Van Basten and Hiddink.

Guus HiddinkChelsea FCAvram Grant

But which one, if any, is going to get the poisoned Chavski chalice?

Ironically, Grant has infinitely more experience at this level, having played (and lost) one league game as manager.

Van Basten has near-zero managerial pedigree and Lippi appears to be able to resist the temptation of cash (he's had offers from plenty of clubs since leading Italy to World Cup success last summer), although everyone has their price.

Of the three, Guus Hiddink is the most likely choice, even for someone so mixed-up as Roman Abramovich.

We are led to believe that Mr A is bankrolling Hiddink's wages with Russia, but that arrangement will almost certainly end if England qualify for Euro 2008 at Russia's expense. The two teams play each other in Moscow on October 17 with the last round of qualifiers on November 21.

The ex-Holland boss will be free to take control at Chelsea on November 22, despite the smokescreen from his agent Cees van Nieuwenhuizen that he doesn't want to manage in the Premier League and that the Russian FA are close to finalising a contract extension.

The Goose may leave things until January, perhaps having already written off Chelsea's league chances by then and wanting to enjoy a Christmas blow out on the Oranjeboom?

That is, unless England slip up and Hiddink is required to finish the job at the European Championships finals next summer, sending Abramovich and his chief bungler Peter Kenyon back to the drawing board.

Has anyone got a number for Dennis Wise?

Crazy frog look alike is non other than Everton's Moyes. Grant does a good impression tho. To be honest i don't think any manager can come in and make a major improvement over night (Sven apart). Real Madrid don't understand that and look like complete idiots 99% of the time. I'd give this bloke a chance, after all Mourinho couldn't even beat a fly near the end, and he had the so called backing and trust of his £320M team !!

Why people think Van Basten will all of a sudden bring some kind of Dutch total football is beyond me.

If you actually watch his team play, they are pragmatic, yes they play with three forwards but they are nothing compared to the dutch teams of yester year.

He has no experince of club football, and would be an even bigger mistake, than sacking maureen.

They should just go for Juande Ramos, just look where hes taken Sevilla on their budget, imagine what he could do with hundreds of millions of roubles behind him?

You're right mate, Johan Cryuff is the 'big' man when it comes to reproducing top level total football at club level (see Barcelona during his time in charge) I think people are getting one of the greatest ever strikers mixed up with one of the greatest ever players.

Well, the thing is, how do you replace Jose? He was a special one and you need another special one to replace him. You could do a lot worse than Fabio Capello. The question is, what self respecting manager is going to take a job somewhere when he doesn't have full control?

Zinedine Zidane wrote...

None of these people will come to chelsea, and if they do they won't stay. Why would they? To get a lot of money but have their careers ruined by an owner who knows best? He'll leave some 'yes man' in charge.

I personally hope Grant stays Chelsea manager as hes guiding you lot towards midtable mediocrity.. There was a story that Abramovich came into the dressing room after the Rosenborg draw and said sarcastically "Fantastic football" to Jose and the team, he should have done it again today.

I think Chelseas next manager will be Roman Abramovich, Vladimir Putin will be Director of Football and Shevchenko will be the Assistant Manager.

I think Zinedine's right - which reputable manager would want to work alongside (or under) a control freak like Abramovich?

He may have been seen as the best thing that happened to Chelsea. Now, the club's reputation stinks.

Herbert Lom wasn't it? Dreyfus? Yes, he's got the same deadpan, slightly puzzled or anxious face.

P'raps he's wondering if he'll get a £25m golden goodbye. Doubt it. He'll be lucky to get 25 quid and a free platter of butties.

Is Abramovich the bumbling, deluding Clouseau or is that Peter Kenyon?
