Touchline Dad

Touchline Dad

TOUCHLINE Dad is written by Peter Harvey, a newspaper editor with Trinity Mirror Merseyside. Father-of-three Peter, 40, was a writer for the Liverpool Echo during the 1990s and has been editor of Trinity Mirror titles the Crosby Herald, Bootle Times and the Advertiser Series, West Lancashire. Touchline Dad is a lifelong Liverpool fan.

Our Jack...

Jack with his first Man of the Match award

JACK Harvey is seven, going on seventy-seven. He's a dependable, no-nonsense defender for Marine FC's U7s. He's played in the Bootle and Netherton league and Hightown league in north Merseyside. Jack has also played for Crosby Stuart. He is being encouraged to appreciate both Liverpool AND Everton...for now at least.

The Gaffer

The Gaffer

THE Gaffer is a true Blue. She's now swapped her Gwladys Street season ticket for one at the new Liverpool One shopping complex. She still gets steamed up thinking about Graeme Sharp in his skimpy shorts.

Not forgeting...

Emily

EMILY is five and has no interest in football. Her kicks come from dressing up, make-up, bangles and beads. Oh, and shoes. She changes them at least five times a day. Likes ballet, swimming and shopping. Cross her at your peril.

And finally...

Paddy

PADDY inherited a mini Everton kit from Sam down the road. No doubt 'Pads' will also get Jack's pass-me-downs, so that will narrow his allegiance to Real Madrid, Juventus, Republic of Ireland, England, Everton and Liverpool. Loves pirates, Shrek and Wall-e. He's got the second worst temper I know...

Marine AFC

FORMED in 1894 and based in Crosby, north Mersyside. The first team plays in the Northern Premier League and were champions in 1994 and 1995. 220.jpgThey had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Crosby Stuart

THIS was Jack's first club. It was formed in the early 1970s in north Liverpool and is now one of the biggest and most successful junior football clubs in the North West. Crosby StuartFormer players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'

Football Crazy

"JACK stood before me in his Buzz Lightyear pyjamas, hands on hips. I kicked him hard in the shins. Instead of falling to the carpet and rolling in agony, he laughed. 'Do it again, Dad. Do it again. We’ll trick Mum.' I didn’t fancy chancing our comedy double act with The Gaffer, so instead Jack clambered into bed still wearing his new 'shinnies.' 'Maybe tomorrow, eh dad?' he asked as he closed his eyes to see his Premier League heroes greet him."

Yak Attack Stats

Posted by Peter Harvey on August 30, 2007 7:16 PM |

EFCA LOOK at the official Opta stats may worry Blues celebrating the arrival of Yakubu for a club record £11.25m.

His shooting accuracy for 2006/7 was just 40% compared to Andy Johnson (58%), James McFadden (54%), Victor Anichebe (43%) and James Vaughan (41%).

Do the stats add up for the Yak?Rising star James VaughanVictor AnichebeAJ

He will arguably get more chances at Everton than at Portsmouth and Middleborough, but his conversion rate is poor - just 14% compared to Johnson and Anichebe (both 21%), Vaughan (18%) and McFadden (15%).

Johnson's off-the-ball industry will always give him the nod over the Yak.

On the plus side Yakubu's passing, dribbling and crossing stats compare OK with the others and to his credit he has banged in between 12 to 15 goals each of the last three seasons.

However, when promising youngster Vaughan has recovered from his shoulder injury, the costly Yakubu could well be relegated to the bench?

Depends I guess. If Yak can do better under Moyes, he could be in with a shout for a permanent first team spot.

Plus Vaughen's still somewhat inexperianced, so it might not be the best idea to make him permanent starting 11 player just yet.

You can spin stats to suit whatever argument though - you're obviously coming at it from a negative point of view. From a positive point of view he had a goals to games ratio of 1 in 2 at Pompey and 1 in 3 at Boro.
No disrespect to those two clubs but if he can do that at two predominantly poor clubs then there is no reason he cannot produce that sort of firepower when being given service from the likes of Arteta, Fernandes, Osman or Pienaar and playing alongside a proven striker in Andy Johnson.

That'll be the same Yakubu who's scoring ratio (in games started) is nearly 1 in 2 & the same Yakubu who's PL scoring record over the last 4 seasons is second only to Henry

He's been dis-interested at Boro for last few months (who can blame him) - but the move will do him good & he'll find his form again at GP - looking forward to seeing him & AJ at the Derby???

You forgot that he can down more big macs than any other striker in the premier league. If you got prizes for eating, you would have player of the year on your books.

There's no disputing Yakubu's scoring record is good and it's a fair assumption that with Arteta & Co creating chances he could bag 20 goals this season.

However, I'm not convinced even Moyes can properly motivate him and the unsettled Yak could be on his way again this time next year.

I detect Blues fans are not convinced he's the answer, especially considering the price tag. Compare the reaction of fans to Liverpool signing Torres and/or Man Utd signing Tevez.

The jury's definitely still out on Yakubu. Naturally, I hope he proves his doubters wrong, including me.

Is he a stocky version of Anelka?

Yes, the derby could be fun with Kuyt, Torres, AJ and Yakubu lining up - but aren't they always?

Oh happy days! Mr Harvey, did you not realize that the photos on that disc I gave you were copyrighted? (Is that a real word?) You will be hearing from my legal department as soon as I can get Legal Aid. Malibu here I come!

Ron, perhaps I should hand the CD over to the cops? Did you have written permission to take those photos of little boys? See YOU in court!!!

GOALFLASH: The Yak takes ten minutes to make a fool of me on his debut against Bolton. But can he keep it up?

I think your initial thoughts may have been correct Peter.
My bluenose friends inform that the Yak is scared of heights and therefore wont let his feet leave the ground.
Being kept on the bench by a misfiring Andrew Johnson, say it all really.
You'll never guess what I found in my garden on Thursday night.....AJs penalty!

I thought it was James Vaughan returning from injury that may force the £13.25m Yak onto the bench.

At this rate, the club's record signing could be considered Everton's number 4 striker.

I'll reserve judgement for a few more weeks but it's not looking good for him.

Mind you, where has Torres been sat for most of the last two league games????!!

csb wrote...

You have a point Peter, but I think the reason Torres is sitting on the bench is totally different to the reason Yakubu is!
I think James Vaughan will (if he keeps injury free) become Everton's best striker sooner rather than later and the remainder of the strikers will be picking up the pieces so to speak.
He is another great prospect for Man U.
