IT takes a brave man to stand in front of the Kop and call the crowd gay.
In the early 1960s that's just what BBC news reporter Mr Cholmondley-Warner did when despatched to Anfield (isn't that up North?) to do a piece about the Kop's famous singing.

As the 30,000 swaying fans, many sporting mop tops and pencil thin ties, belted out their versions of the Fab Four's 'She Loves You' and Cilla Black's 'Anyone Who Had a Heart,' Mr C-W waxed lyrical in his clipped Oxbridge tones:
"It's usually thought that Welsh international rugby crowds are the most muscial and passionate in the world but I've never seen anything like this Liverpool crowd.
"On the field here the gay and inventive ferocity they show is quite stunning. The Duke of Wellington before the Battle of Waterloo said of his own troops 'I don't know what they do to the the enemy but, by God, they frighten me.'
"I'm sure that some of the players here this afternoon must be feeling the same way."
You can almost hear the wags saying "Come 'ere and say that." Don't think he would have shown his face in the Arkles or the Abbey afterwards.
Anyway, look and listen for yourself...

They had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Former players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'

I'm sure that some of our line are 'gay' too. One of the dads told me recently that he likes nothing better than going 'camping' at the weekend, and of a night he curls up with his favourite book 'Scouting for Boys'. Ring any bells sweetpea?
