I COULD hear sniggering from some of the mums along the touchline the other evening and I felt their eyes upon me.

As I stood frozen not knowing what to do or say, I was reminded of a girl I once fancied at school who caught me sneaking a peak at her across the road.
‘Worra you looking at?’ she squealed. ‘Have I gotta yellow welly on me head?’ Hmm…classy.
Back to the present, I strained to pick up a few clues, thwarted by a blustery wind. What I heard only compounded the mystery.
Were they saying I was like John Motson?
Oh God. Had I been muttering a running commentary without realising? Is it linked to my mid-life regression which finds me reading Viz comics out loud in the bath and following the words with my finger?
‘Well, good evening. As you can see there’s a full moon as the two teams line up. Not much atmosphere up there. Plenty of atmosphere down here though, Gary.’
I watched the rest of the game with gritted teeth.
It was only when I got back to the car and glanced in the rear view mirror that the penny dropped. Well ladies, I’m delighted my new sheepskin coat provides entertainment as well as warmth.
