TOUCHLINE dads can talk nonsense (I should know) – and behave appallingly.
At one of Jack’s first training sessions, many months ago now, there was a loud fella who paced up and down shouting instructions to his son.
Soon I found myself watching him rather than Jack. He fascinated me for all the wrong reasons.
His son - a wispy little thing - could seemingly do no right in his father’s eyes.
Bearing in mind his son was four or five and it was just a friendly coaching session, I wondered what this gobby character would be like if ever his son progressed in football circles.
The ludicrous screeching reached a climax with ‘Send it down the line, lad. Down the line.’
His son stopped on the spot and looked around, totally baffled by his dad’s request. Jack nipped in, stole the ball and bolted.
I would have felt sorry for the youngster had he not displayed an equally obnoxious attitude to that of his dad, huffing and puffing his way round the pitch criticising everyone around him and refusing to pass.
Thankfully, we haven’t seen him or his dad again. Perhaps they’ve taken up ballet?

They had a famous FA Cup run in the early 1990s, eventually being knocked out by Crewe 3-1 in the 3rd round. Roly Howard was manager for a record 33 years (1972-2005), although he will always be remembered by some fans as Kenny Dalglish's window cleaner. TV presenter Ray Stubbs once asked: "How's business, Roly?" to which Roly replied "Oh you know - ups and downs."

Former players include Michael Ball (Everton and Rangers) and Stephen Wright (Liverpool and Sunderland). The club motto is 'To Enjoy, Not Destroy.'
